Communities, Leadership, and Change Micro-Inquiry Collection | Grades K–5

Big questions. Meaningful evidence. Inquiry that fits your classroom.

Help students investigate how people shape communities and create change. This collection includes 10 Micro-Inquiry lessons connecting culture, economics, geography, the environment, leadership, and civic action.

Students explore questions about everyday choices and larger public decisions—from holiday traditions and food prices to environmental trade-offs, equal rights, and peaceful protest. They compare perspectives, examine consequences, and support their thinking with evidence.

Most lessons take 20–45 minutes and follow a consistent four-source structure—Compelling, Context, Contrast, and Complexity—before students construct a claim answering the lesson’s compelling question.

Explore 10 inquiry topics:

  • Holiday Traditions

  • Winter Strawberries

  • Building Factories

  • Yellowstone Wolves

  • Three Gorges Dam

  • Sojourner Truth

  • Suffragists

  • Martin Luther King Jr.

  • Peaceful Protest

  • Global Women

What’s included:

  • Student-facing sources, guided analysis questions, and argument tasks.

  • Teacher lesson plans with background information, vocabulary, procedures, and explanatory notes.

  • Flexible timing guidance, discussion questions, and differentiation suggestions.

  • Sentence frames and options for oral, dictated, drawn, or written claims.

  • Guidance for evidence-based discussion and teaching complex topics.

Individual lessons target different elementary grade bands, with the Peaceful Protest inquiry extending through grade 7. Choose the lessons that fit your students, teach them as an interdisciplinary sequence, or integrate them into existing social studies and literacy units.

Build students’ ability to ask thoughtful questions, consider different perspectives, and explain how choices and collective action affect communities.

Reduce the design load. Preserve the thinking load.
