With rhythms that add quaver rests into the mix.
- Day 4: Clapping rhythms with changing time signatures
Adding in minim rests and rhythm passages that have changing time signatures.

Then you move onto the exercises, which look like this:
Once you've had a go yourself, press play to reveal the solution and you'll be able to check your answers and clap along with me - complete with the follow-along pointy pencil!:
By the end of the course you will:
-
Understand all of the beginner level note values
-
How to read and clap combinations of them in rhythm
-
How to read those rhythm in three different time signatures
-
How to interpret additional markings such as repeat bars and first/second time bars
-
How to read rhythms that have a starting bar with a different number of beats than the time signature
-
Have solid-as-rock skills in how time signatures work and how to decipher and read rhythm passages that will give you a brilliant foundation to work from when you move on to working with pitch, melody and more advanced rhythms and time signatures
This IS for you if you are:
✅ an absolute beginner to music & theory who wants to learn about & develop your rhythm reading skills from scratch.
✅ a self-taught learner who struggles with reading rhythm.
✅ a singer or instrumental learner looking to develop foundational skills in reading music.
✅ a music student preparing for tests, exams or auditions.
✅ a music learner who has had a basic introduction to note values, simple time signatures, rests, dots and ties who want to put all those things together.
This is NOT for you if you are:
❌ a musician looking to learn an instrument—this course is focused entirely on clapping rhythms.
❌ looking for advanced rhythm training (e.g., polyrhythms, irregular time signatures).
❌ looking for pitch or melody exercises—this course strictly focuses on rhythm.
❌ wanting a broader music theory course—this is specifically designed for mastering rhythm in simple time signatures (Check out the other resources though!)
❌ someone who hasn't had a preliminary introduction to note values and the stave.
Luckily you'll be able to find these on the Notes on Theory tiktok page, so be sure to check them out. And there are some very helpful links listed inside the reference section of the course, so you'll be able to give them a watch before you get started!
Who's Teaching Me?
I’ve been working professionally for over 25 years, writing music for stage, production, media and more.
During that time, alongside my professional commissions, I have worked extensively in music education, including via a private music tuition and coaching practice that I had for well over ten years and my music is currently published in the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) national exam syllabus.
I believe music theory should be accessible for everyone who wants to learn it, and I especially love breaking down concepts that are perceived as being difficult and breaking down other barriers that a lot of beginners feel stops them from giving it a go, which is why I started posting free lessons @notesontheory on TikTok.
I want people to develop skills in music theory in a way that avoids overwhelm, keeps everything bite-size, managable, affordalble, and in a way that makes finally understanding all those dots, squiggles and lines, effortless and refreshingly possible!
And I decided to make some resources like this course to help people do that.
Hope you love it.
Thanks for being here.
