Learn 52 Beginner Performance Directions & Markings in a Flash! (Literally)

Music Theory is a LOT

There are so many concepts to take in, and
the overwhelm can be real.

The best way to absorb it isn't by cramming, but by breaking things into bite-sized parts that connect and build together.

Performance Directions

are the symbols, terms and articulation markings
that appear in your music.

Unfortunately there aren't really any tricks or shortcuts to learning them - it's usually a case of memorising what they mean and recognising or looking them up as you come across them.

At beginner level you start with the most popular and essential ones, where all of the performance terms you will learn are Italian.

As you progress through the levels, more are added, with each set building on the last.

Over time the list grows to include rarer and more complex markings eventually spanning across three different languages to include, along with more Italian terms, French and German terms as well.

But before we get there, we have to start at the beginning, right?

What Does 'Beginner Level' Mean?

For general reference, all the material included in this
Performance Directions Flashcard Set at Beginner Level covers the equivalent of everything you’d need to know if you were going to take your
Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM)
Grade 1 theory exam.

It's really important to have a learning reference point , so mapping resources and concepts against the ABRSM framework
is an incredibly helpful way to guage a level and track progress.

Not to mention it helps with lesson structure.

It is just a reference though.
There's no pressure or need for you to take any exams.
Unless you want to of course!

Whatever you decide, it's important to say that this is not the focus of the work and teaching here at Notes on Theory which is all about keeping the process of learning music theory as chill as possible!

Who's Teaching Me?

I’ve been working professionally for over 25 years, writing music for stage, production, media and more.

During that time, alongside my professional commissions, I have worked extensively in music education, including via a private music tuition and coaching practice that I had for well over ten years and my music is currently published in the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) national exam syllabus.

I believe music theory should be accessible for everyone who wants to learn it, and I especially love breaking down concepts that are perceived as being difficult and breaking down other barriers that a lot of beginners feel stops them from giving it a go, which is why I started posting free lessons @notesontheory on TikTok.

I want people to develop skills in music theory in a way that avoids overwhelm, keeps everything bite-size, managable, affordalble, and in a way that makes finally understanding all those dots, squiggles and lines, effortless and refreshingly possible!

And I decided to make some resources like this course to help people do that.

Hope you love it.

Thanks for being here.
